How scaling works

Hand levels use a linear formula

Every Planet upgrade adds the same fixed Chips and Mult for that hand. Chips and Mult each grow linearly, while their product accelerates because both sides of the score are increasing.

Chips(L) = Base Chips + (L − 1) × Chips per Level
Mult(L) = Base Mult + (L − 1) × Mult per Level

Example: Level 10 Straight

30 + 9 × 30 = 300 Chips
4 + 9 × 3 = 31 Mult

Hand level is not hand rank

Level changes scoring values. It does not change which cards count as a Straight, Flush, Pair, or another poker hand.

How to increase hand levels

Planet cards +1

Each Planet upgrades one matching poker hand. Saturn upgrades Straight; Jupiter upgrades Flush; Pluto upgrades High Card.

Black Hole all hands +1

The Spectral card loops through every hand, including the three secret hands before they are visible.

Orbital Tag +3

Skipping a Blind with an Orbital Tag upgrades the hand named on that tag by three levels.

Space Joker chance +1

Each played poker hand has the displayed probability to gain one level.

Burnt Joker +1 per round

Upgrades the poker hand represented by the first cards you discard each round.

The Arm −1

This Boss Blind lowers the played hand by one level, but its normal effect does not reduce a hand below Level 1.

Secret Planet rule: Planet X, Ceres, and Eris are soft-locked. First play Five of a Kind, Flush House, or Flush Five respectively; its Planet can then enter the normal Planet pool.

Practical comparison

Which hand is best to level?

There is no universal answer. Intrinsic scaling matters, but consistency decides whether you can cash it in. Among common hands, Straight has notably stronger level growth than Flush: Saturn adds +30 Chips and +3 Mult, while Jupiter adds +15 Chips and +2 Mult.

Level 10 Straight

300 Chips × 31 Mult = 9,300 base score

Level 10 Flush

170 Chips × 22 Mult = 3,740 base score

High Card and Pair can still dominate when Jokers, Steel Cards, retriggers, or held-card effects provide most of the score. Use this chart to compare intrinsic hand growth—not as a standalone tier list.

Balatro hand level FAQ

Is Level 50 the maximum?

No. The source applies level changes without an upper cap. L15 and L50 are only convenient chart presets.

Do secret hands start at Level 1?

Yes. All 12 entries exist at Level 1 when a run starts, although Five of a Kind, Flush House, and Flush Five begin hidden.

Does Black Hole level hidden hands?

Yes. It upgrades every hand entry, not only the hands currently visible in Run Info.

Does Observatory raise hand levels?

No. Observatory gives X1.5 Mult when a held Planet matches the played hand; it does not alter that hand's level.
